Take Flight

Acrylic and spray paint on brick
Washington, DC
2017
Take Flight is an homage to Latino, African, and Caribbean families, artists, leaders, and entrepreneurs who have shaped DC, and particularly the communities along Georgia Avenue. For many years, from 1993-2011, this was the site of the DC Caribbean Carnival, a vibrant cultural festival rooted in the celebration of emancipation. Flowing blue lines suggest the natural forces of wind and waves, alluding to immigrant journeys, and also the ties that connect diaspora communities. The woman releases a fledgling that grows to a soaring bird.

This mural was sponsored by Words Beats & Life and located at District Dogs at 3210 Georgia Ave, Washington, DC.
